SHEplc Speaks
SHEplc for women in business Being a public speaker is a challenge every time. It is worth getting some help with your presentation skills. You really need to practice what you have to say, be your own critic. These days most people have phones or video cameras to record how you look and what you say. Be your own judge, do you look good, sound good and above all have you got the content. All speeches should be like a good story, a beginning, a middle and an end. Above all, get the timing right. There is nothing worse than a speaker rambling on and members of the audience have commintments and need to dash off. People leaving disrupts the whole room and can be embarrassing for the organisers. So be strict with yourself and stick to your script.

One thing that will put you off, is facing people at close quarters and one person has a dead expression. That person can make it totally obvious you are not on the same level or your talk is of absolutely no interest. No matter how keen other poeple are at hearing you - this one face stares out of the crowd and with the best will in the world, you cannot ignore it. How do you deal with this? You could try braving it out and stare directly at your offender... but you run the risk of forgetting what you are saying. You could turn you back and make it obvious you are ignoring that person.... but you might look very silly! You only have seconds to think, try a look at the person and smile broadly, if you get no connection still, revert to looking upwards and avoid everyone's gaze. if you make a point of looking at the top of heads - you won't see any faces.. you can block them out, this will cause you the least effort and give you back control.

Good luck, public speaking is still the number 1 fear.

Want to know more about those QR Codes?
Meet my friend Lisa from In A Pickle - freelance PA:
Technology is changing all the time and new kids on the block are Quick Response Codes (known as QR Codes). Don't be put off by the techy sounding name - they're the gateway to smart marketing, content sharing and selling. Quick Response Codes (QR codes) are similar to barcodes - they contain data which can be shared and read by using the camera and a QR Reader app on your iPhone or indeed any other camera-enabled Smartphone. You can use these codes to link the user to digital content on the web, email, SMS. Their ability to connect people with each other and multimedia is very useful for businesses and customers alike. The possibilities are endless!     more

Communication - communication and social media. We have all learned so much with texting - blogging, facebook and Twitter... BUT .... have we lost the art of conversation??? Watch people at meetings now - thier fingers say more than thier tongues. They wave fingers around in the air to sign texting or typing. We need to embrace all new forms of communication - but lets not lose the art of the original one = TALKING     more
